Submariner Monument Opened
Owing to the initiative of several Russian citizens supported by Santa Marina Holiday Village, a memorial of the Soviet submariners who died in the Second World War was opened in the town of Sozopol. Representatives of Bulgarian public organizations, politicians, Russian diplomats and citizens attended the opening ceremony.
The Mayor of Sozopol Mr. Panayot Reyzi and the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Varna Mr. Yuriy Solovev promised that the monument would be well taken care of. They also said events to commemorate the deceased Russian soldiers would be organized each year at the memorial.
The submariner monument was erected at the exact place where in 1941, the sea waves pushed ashore the bodies of two of the Submarine C 34 crew members.
In World War II, five Russian submarines sunk near the Bulgarian coast. Four of them were thoroughly researched by scientists from Bulgaria and Russia. The remains of Submarine C 34 have not been discovered yet.
